ATTENTION!
Where is it? What is it?
The photo in the April 28 issue of the Evanston Roundtable is Armin A. Scheler's," The Answer ," c. 1940, located on the facade of the Evanston Post Office on Davis Street. A limestone high relief, "The Answer " was commissioned by the Treasury Department during the latter part of the Great Depression. Often referred to as WPA art, works like "The Answer " were in fact commissioned by the Treasury Department as part of an overall effort to employ artists for the public good. The Works Project Administration, the Treasury Department and the Civilian Conservation Corp had many overlapping agendas, not the least of which being conservation, preservation and beautification.
This concludes the Where Is It-What Is It contest sponsored by getaway-chicago.com and the Evanston Roundtable. We had a lot fun doing this and hope ERT readers did too.
Regrettably, nobody had the right answer to this last picture.
