The sculpture featured in the "Where Is It? What Is It?" contest in the March 3 issue of the Evanston Roundtable is located in front of Patten Gymnasium at the corner of Lincoln and Sheridan. Affectionately known as "Jim," it is one of two cast bronze, allegorical figures created by the American sculptor, Herman MacNeil (1866-1947). Its companion piece (an allegorical female figure) is known as "Pat" (get it!).
Jim's real title is Physical Development and Pat's title is Intellectual Development. Neither figure is difficult to interpret, however Jim in his heroic physical perfection seems to be oblivious to the poor sap sprawled at his feet. This "weakling" seems to be wearing a football helmet (hmm), but upon closer inspection, he is also wearing what looks like some sort of breastplate, an accoutrement not commonly associated with football.
The winner is Albert Thompson of Evanston.
